January 21 is the Squirrel Appreciation Day in USA. The tradition started thanks to Christy Hargrove, a wildlife rehabilitator from North Carolina, who started the first Squirrel Appreciation Day on January 21, 2001. The public opinion about squirrels is sometimes rather hostile in the USA. Squirrels are seen as pests or as thieves of the bird´s food. Therefore there are people trying to change this view and point out that squirrels are amazing creatures. On this day some TV stations broadcast documentaries about squirrels so they are trying to change the public opinion. Our rehab centrum is joining them, although the squirrel is legally protected and considered as a very popular creature in the Czech republic. Today´s photographs show how beautiful and amazing creatures actually squirrels are.
